WELCOME, PRESTUDENT TEACHERS, Fall 2011 & Spring 2012

WELCOME, FALL 2011 & Spring 2012 Prestudent Teachers
Pre-Student Teaching (EDUC 362: Teaching Experience I) serves as the initial field experience for prospective student teachers and is completed the semester prior to student teaching.

Teaching Experience I is composed of two eight-week phases. During Phase I (24 hours), as pre-student teachers (PSTs), you will complete eight weeks of observation and reflection in a variety of classrooms, schools, and school districts in the Four Corners area. During this time, you will select one classroom where you want to spend the remaining eight weeks of the semester (Phase II-18 hours). During Phase II, you will engage in practice teaching, plus an intensive single subject solo teaching experience for ten consecutive days (10 hours). In addition, as reflective practitioners, you will attend a weekly seminar to discuss your progress.

Field Experience provides valuable preparation for full-time student teaching, and for future employment in the classroom. It also provides an opportunity for you to apply theory and practices learned in class discussions and assignments. The PST experience helps you progress toward the professional understandings, practices, and identities that are the hallmark of an effective teacher.

Congratulations on this point in your professional journey. I look forward to being your guide and learning beside you this semester........Frances

Due Week 2 Why I Teach post to your webpage
Veteran teachers explain their love (and sometimes hate) of and long commitment to teaching their students. Think about your own reasons for choosing teaching as a profession. Are you an “Accidental Teacher” or someone from a family of teachers? Write your own Why We Teach essay describing how you knew you wanted to become a teacher, and some of the experiences that led you to enter this teacher education program. What are your goals for yourself, and what are your beliefs about effective teachers? Please post to your webpage.
